Ashlyn gasped and opened her eyes. No longer was she standing in the darkness. She was falling so slowly that she almost thought she was just standing. Ashlyn observed her surroundings. She deducted she was in an underground tunnel. The atmosphere hinted of mold and the dark bricks were chipped and ruined. The sixteen-year-old looked down at her hands. All she had was her cell phone and knife. Knife would definitely come in handy but the phone was an iffy. Ashlyn flipped it open and dialed 9-1-1. "Hello?" She held the phone up to her ear. "Ow!" Instead of the dial tone or the operator's voice, there was a screeching noise. "Guess there's no reception in fairy land." She knew though that despite the bad reception, the phone would provide good lighting. Ashlyn held it up and took cautiously walked around with the phone as her lantern. She didn't know how long she was walking, it could've been an hour or two minutes but it didn't change the fact that there was no end to the tunnel. The noise of great wind mixed with a loud moan chilled the girl to her bone. Ashlyn started running. Fear gripped her chest. Oh why, oh why couldn't she have just wished for money instead of adventure? Her little lantern shone on an entrance of a new passageway. Ashlyn pushed her legs to go faster and rounded the corner. The sight of a beggar man made her stop and gasp.
The old beggar man wore layers and layers of fabric, all ragged and torn. The hood over his head covered his eye and half of his face. He sat on the ground, leaning against the stone wall. In one his weathered hands, he held a rusty cup where there were very few coins. He lifted his face slightly up to the girl and shook the cup, as if to hint her something.
"Oh!" Ashlyn cautiously approached him. She searched herself for change, but upon remembering she had only her phone, knife, and her dress had no pockets. She turned to the old beggar man. "I'm sorry, I don't have money exactly."
He simply bowed his head. She turned away and began walking away but stopped. Ashlyn did not feel comfortable leaving him there without giving him something. She bit her lip and her eye fell on her favorite bracelet. It was a Christmas gift from two years ago. Anya had made it and given it to her. The chain was real gold, about 24 carots. Three little charms hung from it: a mermaid, a seasell, and a fish. It was one of Ashlyn's most prized posessions. She bit her lip and looked over her shoulder to the beggar man. She walked back up to him and said rather timidly, "Its not much but it should get you a decent meal or atleast something to eat." She unclipped the bracelet. "It means a lot to me, I hope it does a lot for you." She dropped the bracelet in his cup and felt satisfied that she given him something and guilt because her best friend made it for her. She breathed and finally asked, "You wouldn't happen to know how to get to the mortal world, do you?"
The beggar man shook his head.
"Oh," She said rather disappointedly. "Alright then. Thank you anyways!" She took off, desperate to find a way out of the tunnels and a portal back home.
She knew she had to have been walking for hours. The tunnels never seemed to end. Now that Ashlyn thought about it, she should've asked the beggar man if there was any way out of the tunnels too. But it was too late now. She had covered so much ground that she would frustrated if she went back. Plus, she made a few turns that now she didn't remember the way.
"It can't go on forever," She whispered to herself. "It has to end sometime." She picked up the pace with a new determination. "I'm going home and I don't care what Mr. Mighty Dumbass says!" Her little flashlight shone on a deadend. "What?" Ashlyn's shoulders slumped. "You gotta be kidding me!" She kicked the ground and jumped in her frustration. Suddenly the ground beneath her gave way. Ashlyn screamed as she started to fall fast down a very long hole. She stopped and sighed when she realized this was going to be a long fall. At least I'm not on my back or stomach this time. Hmm. This reminds me of the rabbit hole - "That's it." She crossed her arms over her stomach. "No more Alice in Wonderland for me."
