Five years ago…
“Annabelle Sofia-Margaret Addison Millie Rosalina Isabelle Elizabeth Pierce, I love you. So, Will you do the honor of marrying me?” Gabriel Beckham was kneeling in front of Annabelle in the park under the lights.
Annabelle looked down at her hands. She wasn’t quite sure how to feel. It was her seventeenth birthday and she had just finished high school for good. She loved Gabriel as much as he loved her, but she wasn’t sure how her parents would feel about her getting married before college.
“You see, the thing is, I just, my parents, and I really love you, and I want to marry you, but my parents, and college.” Anna stopped when she realized she was babbling like a senseless fool.
“Yes, I know that, and that’s why I will wait for you. I will wait for you to finish college. I just wanted to know if when you were done with college, you would.” He said.
“You know what; I don’t care what my parents say. I just graduated from high school for crying out loud, I’ll do whatever I want. If that just so happens to be marry you, then, I will marry you. I love you more than anything in this world.” Anna finished.
“Are you sure? I mean, we can wait. I want to do what’s best for you.” He said, and she looked straight into his deep, soothing blue eyes.
“Gabriel, I’m absolutely sure that I want to marry you, now. I don’t want to wait four years, now.” Anna said and gently kissed Gabriel. When it ended, he silently slipped the ring onto her finger and sat down next to her and put his arm around her.
“Maybe I should get you home. If your parents aren’t going to like the fact about the engagement, we don’t want to make them angrier.” Gabriel said and they both got up and started walking back to Anna’s house…
Three months later…
“Tomorrows the big day isn’t it?” Annabelle’s strawberry blonde and small sky blue eyed best friend asked.
“Yeah, I’m really excited. Tomorrow is the anniversary of when we first met.” Anna said, pulling her dark brown hair out of its ponytail. Her beautiful long wavy curly hair landed about halfway down her back and her large light sea green eyes stood out, even when she wasn’t wearing eye make-up.
“Anna, you don’t seem very excited.” She said.
“What do you mean?” Anna asked.
“Well, for one, it’s not just your anniversary of the first time you met; it will also be your wedding day and anniversary.” She replied.
“Madelyn, it’s not that big of a deal.” Anna said.
“Oh yeah, you want to bet? You won’t feel so calm and relaxed tomorrow. You are seventeen, he is twenty-one. There are bound to be some issues with your parents, especially since you just graduated high school.” Madelyn said.
“Well, that’s nothing. I spent about four hours arguing with them about it, but that’s not my real problem.” Anna said.
“Okay, what are you waiting for, spill.” Madelyn said.
“So, you know how Gabriel and I have been living together for the past few months? Well…” She said and touched her stomach.
“No way, you’re not, are you sure?” Madelyn asked.
“Yes, I took the test several times partly because my “disease” has skipped two months so far, and I sort of had it when we did it.” Anna said and sat down.
“Does he know?” Madelyn asked.
“No, I was going to tell him right after the wedding tomorrow.” She said.
“That’s a good thing. Just try to get some sleep; I’ll finish up the details and other things.” Madelyn said.
“Thank you so much. Love you.” Anna said.
“Love you too. Good Night.” Madelyn said and Anna walked upstairs to her room…
The Next Day…
“Anna! We have to head to the Church!” Madelyn yelled upstairs.
“Hold on! I’ll be right down.” Annabelle yelled back downstairs. Anna grabbed her purse and began walking down the steps. The top of her head was folded in and out of continuous loops all the way down her hair. It was perfect as usual and her make-up was also perfect as usual. Black eye-liner, Brown eye shadow, perfect pale skin, pink rouge on her cheekbones, and ruby red lipstick with gloss. Anna was wearing a pair of dark wash Capri’s and a black cami. She ran down the steps and slipped into her black straw wedges. She then ran out to the car and Madelyn drove her to the church…
“Anna, are you almost ready?” Madelyn asked.
“Yeah, almost…Wait, no, I can’t. I need to talk to him.” Anna said and lifted her gown so she wouldn’t step on it and walked out the door.
“Anna, what are you doing?” Madelyn asked.
“I need to talk to him, now. I need to tell him.” Anna said.
“You can’t, he’s not here yet.” Madelyn said.
“WHAT? We have 5 minutes! Where the Hell is he?” Annabelle asked.
“We’re not sure, we thought he might be stuck in traffic, but everybody else is here.” Madelyn said.
“Calm down, he wouldn’t do this to me; he must be on his way in now. As soon I get to the altar, he’s gonna run in and say, I’m sorry I’m late.” Annabelle said.
“Okay, let’s go.” Madelyn said and picked up the back of the wedding dress and her veil…
Annabelle was walking behind the flower girls. She had the bouquet of red roses in her hand. She silently looked left to right at the people’s blank faces. She took a deep breath and continued to the altar. When she got there, she stood on her side and held onto the flowers. Derek, Gabriel’s best man stepped forward. His brown eyes were full of sorrow.
“He’s not coming.” Derek whispered.
“What do you mean, he’s sick or, he’s in traffic, or…” She was cut off.
“No, I mean that he’s not coming at all. He left town.” He whispered, and the flowers fell out of her hand. She looked out to the people sitting in the church and ran back up the aisle. She ran out the church doors and down the steps into the garden. She sat on the bench and silently cried. A minute later she heard footsteps running out of the church. They walked into the garden, but Anna didn’t look up.
“I’m so sorry Anna, there has to be a reason why. I know that he doesn’t just leave without an explanation. I know that if I can get him back here, he can explain, and then…” Derek was cut off.
“NO, when you see him again, tell him that I Never want to see his sorry little ass ever again.” Anna said and brushed past Derek and Madelyn. She put her hand to her head as she walked to get her clothes to go home…
Five years later, present time…
“Mommy, Luis being mean to me.” Anna’s little five years old baby girl ran up to her.
“Well, Nicole, you had to have done something.” Anna said.
“Did not, Luis pushed me off the swing.” Nicole said.
“Well, that’s not very nice. Come here.” Anna said and picked up her little girl. She examined the cut on her knee.
“Ouch that hurt.” Nicole said.
“Let’s go get it cleaned up.” Anna said and carried Nicole and set her on the couch. She then grabbed the antibiotic crème out of the medicine cabinet. She then grabbed a princess band-aid. She put a little bit of antibiotic crème on the band-aid and set it on Nicole’s knee.
“It’s a Princess!” Nicole screeched in joy.
“Yes, for my little princess.” Anna said.
“Mommy, where’s my daddy?” Nicole asked.
“I don’t know, I never think about it, okay?” Anna asked.
“But, that’s not a very good answer.” Nicole said.
“Yes, it is.” Anna said.
“NO, it’s not!” Nicole said.
“YES IT IS!” Anna yelled and left her daughter on the couch and walked into her room and slammed the door. She grasped the heart around her neck, took it off, and threw it across the room. It opened and she collapsed on the bed. She saw those deep, mysterious, alluring eyes staring out at her through red brown hair. She looked at her nightstand and pushed the picture of Gabriel off of it. Teardrops glistened in her eyes and she wiped them away.
“Hey Anna, how’s it going?” Derek asked walking into her room.
“How did you…” Anna was cut off.
“Nicole called and asked me to come over. She said you were breaking things again.” Derek said.
“When did my life turn into crap?” Anna asked.
“Sometime when…Never mind.” Derek said.
“I honestly think that you should call him and tell him about Nicole. You know, let her meet him.” Derek said.
“Why should I? Besides, I don’t even have his number.” Anna said.
“You should because you know that it’s the right thing to do. I mean come on; he didn’t even know you were pregnant. Plus, I have his number right here.” Derek said.
“No, I don’t want her to know that her father was the biggest ass hole she will ever know. I know that as soon as he meets her and sees me, he’ll just leave.” Anna said and got up.
“You know that’s not true.” He said.
“Oh yeah, you want to bet? Can you watch Nicole tonight? I have a competition.” Anna said.
“I can’t. I have work.” Derek said.
“Fine, then get out.” Anna said, and Derek left…
Two hours later…
“Hi Lucy, I was wondering if you can babysit now?” Anna asked.
“Sure, I’d love to. Be over in a few minutes.” Lucy said and Anna hung up the phone.
A few minutes later Lucy walked in with her black hair in a high ponytail. She was wearing a pair of denim shorts and a pink t-shirt.
“Hello Ms. Pierce. Nicole and I are going to have so much fun. Good luck in your figure skating competition.” Lucy said.
“Be good for Lucy. Remember your bedtime. Good night sweetie.” Anna said and kissed her toddlers forehead. She then walked out the door and into her silver Volkswagen polo…
One hour later…
“Miss Pierce, you have a phone call.” Somebody said and she took the phone.
“Hello?” Anna said.
“Miss Pierce, this is Lucy, would you please come to the central hospital?” Lucy said.
“Why, what’s wrong?” Anna asked.
“I’ll explain everything. Please just come.” Lucy said.
“I’m on my way.” Anna said and hung up the phone.
“What’s wrong?” The person asked.
“I have to go now.” Anna said, exchanged her skates for shoes, and ran out the door…
Ten minutes later…
“I was making Nicole dinner and she was watching TV and she collapsed and when I went to feel her pulse, her skin was ice cold and her heart rate was very low. I immediately called 911 and they came. Then I got Derek and I called you. I’m so sorry. I didn’t know what else to do.” Lucy was telling Anna what happened when she walked into the hospital. Lucy walked Anna to Nicole’s room. A doctor was in the room and Derek was sitting in the chair next to the bed.
“What’s wrong with her?” Anna asked the doctor and he led her out the door so he could tell her.
“This is really hard for me to tell you. Your daughter has Pericardial Mesothelioma Cancer.” The doctor said.
“And what is that?” Anna asked.
“Mesothelioma Cancer is the most dangerous type of Cancer period; But Pericardial Mesothelioma Cancer is the most dangerous type of Mesothelioma Cancer. It targets the sacs in the heart and its arteries. It is the rarest of all cancers.” The doctor said.
“Will she be okay?” She asked.
“I’m sorry, there’s no cure. There’s no way she can survive this. She’s just a little girl and she doesn’t have the strength to fight this cancer. Not even a grown man of the age of twenty five could fight it off. I’m sorry, but she has only about one week to live.” The doctor said and left Anna alone. Anna walked into the room with tears already running down her cheeks. Derek stood up as she walked in.
“I’m so sorry.” He said and he opened his arms. She walked right into them and she cried her eyes out.
“Mommy, what are you doing here?” A small voice said from behind her and she quickly wiped her face.
“Oh, I just came to see you.” Anna said and stroked her daughters red brown hair. Her skin was as cold as ice. Anna choked back a sob and looked away. She looked so much like her father with her deep blue eyes.
“Mommy, why are you crying?” Nicole asked.
“Oh, no reason, I’m just sorry that I yelled at you liked that earlier today.” Anna said and looked at her baby girl.
“It’s okay; I shouldn’t have been so annoying. I just wanted to know stuff about him, considering I’m never going to meet him…I heard the doctor say that stuff. I pretended to sleep.” Nicole said.
“Go to sleep Nicole, for real.” Anna said and dragged Derek outside and closed the door.
“You have to call him NOW! She really wants to meet her father. Don’t say you can’t face him again, because that little girl in there, her life is ticking by, second by second.” Derek said and handed her his cell phone. She took it and found Gabriel Beckham’s phone number. She hit the send button and waited for someone to pick up. Finally on the sixth ring, somebody picked up.
“Hello?” A high voice sounded on the other line.
“H-hi, is Gabriel there?” Anna asked and her voice was shaky.
“Um, he’s sort of in the shower right now. Would you like me to give him a message?” She asked.
“I-I just wanted him t-to come to central hospital.” Anna said, stuttering a few words here and there.
“May I ask who this is?” Monica asked.
“This is Annabelle Pierce.” Anna said.
“Okay, bye.” Monica said and hung up. Anna lowered the cell phone slowly and pressed end…
“Hey, who was on the phone?” Gabriel asked as he walked out of the bathroom.
“Oh, no one, just some girl named Abele Purse, wanting you to go to central hospital. She sounded really unstable.” Monica said.
“Wait, Annabelle Pierce?” He asked.
“Yeah, that’s it. Wait, you know her?” Monica asked flipping her light blonde hair out of her blue eyes.
“Oh geese, I have to go.” Gabriel said, grabbing his jacket and car keys.
“Okay, I’ll be here.” Monica said as he ran out the door…
“You bastard, you could have told me that he had a girlfriend.” Anna said, throwing the phone at Derek.
“Excuse me, since when? Last time I checked he was single.” Derek said.
“Well, he does, and by the sound of her, I’d say blonde slut. He’s never going to come.” Anna said.
“Not necessarily.” Derek said and pointed down the hall. Gabriel ran through the doors and stopped at the desk. The lady pointed towards them and he rushed down the hall.
“What the hell? Anna, I thought you were the patient. Who is this Nicole person and why should I care?” Gabriel asked.
“You should care because she’s YOUR daughter!” Anna yelled and walked into the room. Gabriel stood there for a minute or so until he reacted.
“WHAT?” He yelled and followed her in.
“You heard me.” She said and looked at her baby girl sleeping.
“Since when do I have a daughter?” Gabriel asked.
“Um, about six months after you left me at the altar.” She said.
“Excuse me; you were 3 months pregnant by the time of our wedding?” He asked.
“Yes and I Never want to relive that one night that created her with you ever again.” Anna said.
“You happened to have enjoyed that night very much.” Gabriel said.
“Oh, sure I did. I am SO glad I did not marry you.” She said.
“See, you just agreed that you enjoyed it.” He said.
“It’s called sarcasm.” Anna said.
“Oh ****, she really is my daughter. Same hair, same bone structure, the only difference is she has your beauty. Wow, did I just say that out loud. I meant the beauty that you had when I met you.” Gabriel said.
“Whatever. That kind of cute thing doesn’t work on me anymore. Nicole has Pericardial Mesothelioma Cancer. She’s not going to make it.” Anna stopped and put her face in her hands.
“So, you call me when she’s about to die.” He said and took her in his arms.
“You don’t understand. You don’t know how hard it was for me not to just go running back into your arms. I had to be strong for Nicole. I didn’t know if you were just going to leave after you meet her. I still don’t know what’s going to happen.” Anna said between sobs.
“Don’t worry, I’m not going anywhere.” Gabriel said.
“What about your girlfriend Monica?” She asked.
“Monica? My girlfriend, hardly, she’s my cousin.” Gabriel said.
“She’s your cousin?” Anna asked.
“Yeah, I only ever loved you. I left because I was told that you didn’t want to marry me and it was just too much to face you. I love you.” He said.
“I love you too.” Anna said and Gabriel silently kissed her passionately for a minute.
“I still loved you then and I still wanted to get married and have a family with you.” Gabriel said.
“Who told you that I didn’t love you and didn’t want to get married to you?” She asked.
“Marissa told me. Why did I believe that little slut?” Gabriel asked.
“I don’t know, but I don’t care.” Anna said and she kissed him.
“Does this mean that we can go home now? I’m bored.” Nicole said, sitting up in her bed.
“Way to go Nicole, we did it.” Derek said as he walked in.
“Derek, what’s going on?” Gabriel asked.
“Oh nothing, we just did it.” Derek said and high fived Nicole.
“Wait a minute, you set this up? DEREK!” Anna screamed.
“What?” He asked.
“It worked.” She said.
“Thank you.” Gabriel said.
“What was that about you still love me and still want to marry me?” Anna asked.
“Annabelle Sofia-Margaret Addison Millie Rosalina Isabelle Elizabeth Pierce, will you marry me for real this time?” Gabriel asked.
“Yes. I do.” Anna said and kissed Gabriel.
One month later…
“You may now kiss your bride.” The priest said, and Annabelle and Gabriel kissed. They then picked up Nicole and lived happily ever after...
“Annabelle Sofia-Margaret Addison Millie Rosalina Isabelle Elizabeth Pierce, I love you. So, Will you do the honor of marrying me?” Gabriel Beckham was kneeling in front of Annabelle in the park under the lights.

The End…
