"Well, I don't think dragons are so bad." Kye says. He’s standing next to her as she unpacks their picnic.
“I think they’re the worst things in the world! “She replies. “They steal the cattle and sheep and eat the shepherds.” her speed increases, “They go and raid cities and villages and steal from people. They burn all the soldiers who go to kill them! They eat the villagers that shoot arrows at them! They’re just big jerks!” She finishes in flurry. Her cheeks turn a bright pink when she realizes that she just went into a rant in front of the Prince. Kye peers down and grins at her flushed face.
“Well, some of them; but I know some who are hermits.” He returns to gazing over the edge of the cliff they’re picnicking on. “You know, I brought you up here for a reason.” Kye glances back at the accompaniment of soldiers and spots Roger, his secretary, in the center. They were still looking at Aly and himself. Not yet, he thinks.
“Are you going to tell me the reason you brought me up here?” She asks. She peers up at him, holding her hand above her eyes as a sun blocker.
“Not yet, but I will show you when the times right.” He plops down next to her, flashes a sparkly grin, and reaches for one of the sandwiches Cook packed.
“No!” she cries and smacks his hand away.
“Hey!” he exclaims.
“I’m not done unpacking all the food yet.” She states.
“Then by all means let me help.” He reaches for the wicker basket, but rubs his hand after he gets smacked again.
“You’re a Prince! You should not be helping unpack!” she was flabbergasted that he wanted to help. Nobody ever wanted to help her with anything.
“Stop smacking me! I invited you here, not the other way around. Of course I’m going to help unpack!” he snatches the basket before she can smack him.
Aly sat frozen for a few minutes. She was thinking about how other servants never wanted to help her but a Prince did. She jumps at the sound of his voice, returning to reality.
“There, finished!” He grins at the food spread before them. He glances at Aly, his smile fading away. “What’s wrong?”
“Nothing,” she says as she plasters on a fake smile, “Ohh, the food looks delicious.”
This time when he reaches for a ham and cheese sandwich, he doesn’t get smacked. He fills his plate up with his sandwich, salad, apple sauce and much more. Aly nibbled on a sandwich while Kye watched her. He could tell she was thinking, but he had no idea what about. Her eyes were glazed over, as if in a trance. Kye waved a hand in front of her face, she didn’t move. He turned around to look at Roger, for once, nobody was watching them.
“Aly, Aly,” he said looking at her, “Aly, Aly!” She jumped at the sound of her name. She glances at him; his eyes were sparkling with a mischievous glint. Automatically, she went on guard. Even though he was fifteen, she knew he could still act like a child sometimes.
“Yes?” she questions, a little mad at him for interrupting her train of thoughts.
“Did you change your mind about dragons yet?” he asks, grinning. Aly’s cheeks flush when she remembers her rant.
“I still don’t like them.” She answers meekly. He glances behind her again. Aly noticed the glint grow brighter.
“Ready?”
“For what?” her brows furrow together, trying to figure out what he was going to do.
“This!” Kye jumps up and sprints to the edge of the cliff. Turning around he grins at her wickedly. The strong wind picks up, making his cloak look like a full body halo. Then he spreads his arms out, and falls back.
"Kye!" she screams and lunges towards the edge. She has to crawl a little to get to be able to see. Gingerly, she peers over the edge and gasps at what she sees.
A black, sleek dragon soars through the sky; its scales have a blue and green undertone. It performs a couple of flips then flies up to where she's peering over the edge. Gazing into its eyes, she realizes that it's Kye.
She hears a commotion behind her.
"Dragon!" a soldier shouts. Automatically, arrows start zipping past her ears. Kye the dragon grins then drops out of sight.
“Aly, Aly, are you alright? Where's the Prince?" Roger yells, bounding up the slope. He looks like a rat, she thinks. He grabs her and pulls her away from the edge roughly, then starts shaking her. "Where is he, where is he?" he shouts, still shaking her.
"He...I-" she stammers, trying to think of a response, her eyes focus on an approaching object behind Roger. Roger, seeing her eyes still, twirls around; dragging her with him.
"Oh, thank goodness!" he exclaims.
"What happened?" Kye asks, his eyes sparkling with the mischievous glint.
“What happened, what happen!? A dragon just flew by and almost ate Aliason!” Roger shoves Aly towards the Prince; he catches her gracefully.
“Your father did not approve of the picnic but you still came! We are heading back to the castle immediately!”
“Aly and I never got to finish our picnic.” He says. Aly’s mind goes foggy, but she has one clear thought, His arms are so strong. Then she faints, in the arms of Prince Edric Nathaniel Kye Daragon.
NEXT CHAPTER
“Where am I?" Aly mutters as she pulls away from unconsciousness. She rubs the sleep from her eyes and sits up.
"You are in the Servant Corridors of my future Castle." says a voice. Aly gasps, she wasn't expecting an answer. She looks over to see Kye lounging in a chair next to her bed. His favorite cloak, the one with the greenish blue lining, is flung over the back of his wooden chair. He’s holding a book she recognizes, but she can’t remember the title. Her brain is still a little foggy. Finally, she lets her eyes slide off Kye. She pans the room, nobody else is there.
Allowing her eyes to rest back on Kye, she asks, "How long have I've been out?” She was still trying to remember the name of the book he's holding.
Kye’s eyes flicker up from the book, but he continues to read. "A few days, but he Doctor wasn't worried. He said it just seemed you went into shock." He flicks another glance at her but again, continues to read.
In a sudden burst of memory, she shouts “You’re a dragon!”
“Shush!” he holds a finger up to his lips, facing her. “Not so loud, you’re the only one outside the Royal Family who knows; and by the way, I’m not a dragon.” He says returning to the book. “I can just transform into a dragon.”
“A beautiful dragon,” she sighs.
“What?” he asks, a smile playing across his lips. He tries to stop it from showing but has no success. A huge grin expands across his face, showing off his perfect, white teeth.
Then she has another burst of memory.
"That's my diary!" she yells at him, "give it back!" she grabs it out of his hands before he can register what was happening.
"But I haven't reached the good part yet!" he exclaims lunging for it. He only get’s one knee on the bed, but that’s enough. She tries to hold it high above her head, but even with the disadvantage, he can still reach. His hand clasps around the old book. He glances down at her, the sunlight reflecting off his eyes. Aly thinks, his eyes look like a cross between diamonds and sapphires. He holds her gaze. She feels his grip on the book releasing. His hand slips from the book to rest on her other side. Aly’s breath comes in short, quick breaths. Kye’s mimics hers. He starts to bring his head closer to hers, stopping, retreating, and then starting again. His lips are only a hand width apart from hers when they hear the creak of the old door opening. Both turn their heads to see who’s disturbing them. They see a foot enter the room. Aly doesn’t know who the foot belongs to, but Kye does. He leaps up and swivels on his heel. He stands with his hands to his side, and then moves his right arm up to his neck, rubbing the birthmark there.
Roger enters the room and bows, “Your majesty, the King and Queen would like to see you in their Private Chambers.”
“Thank you Roger, tell them I’ll be there in a moment.” Kye responds.
“Certainly, your majesty.” He bows again as his backs out of the room, shooting an accusing look at Aly; as if he knew what was going to happen if he hadn’t interrupted.
Kye turns around and grabs his cloak. He flings it over his arm, then turns towards Aly; replacing his hand on his neck as he does so. He opens his mouth, pauses, and then snaps it shut as he turns and darts out of the room.
"Well, I don't think dragons are so bad." Kye says. He’s standing next to her as she unpacks their picnic.
